The recent Victoria fires have destroyed some schools and kindergartens in Ms Bailey's electorate of McEwen, which was the epicentre of the fires. "Just imagine if that fire had happened on the previous Wednesday (when children were in school) and not the Saturday," the Liberal MP said on the ABC. "All of those schools that were just demolished in that fire ... it's just too horrific to really dwell on that." Ms Bailey says she wants schools to be safer. "When we rebuild these schools, we've got to make sure that they're ... whether it's a bunker, whether it's the design of the building - we've got to make sure that those schools are really safe for our children." The Healesville resident said locals were angry about reports a fallen power line may have caused the Kinglake blaze. At least 100 people have been killed and more than 1000 left homeless as a result of fires in Kinglake and the surrounding areas. Lawyers have issued a Victorian Supreme Court class action, on behalf of victims, against the private electricity company responsible for maintaining the power lines, The Sunday Age reports. Ms Bailey said the Country Fire Authority (CFA) had told her one of the power lines had broken before the fire. "It was whipping against the ground and sparked," she said. "We've got to do better, deliver our power better." Ms Bailey also said the issue of fuel reduction burns needed to be addressed as burning off had been "totally inadequate".
