Missing doctor's body found

Polair and police officers retrieved a body from the rocks under the cliffs near Otford yesterday morning.

Police believe the body of a middle-aged woman retrieved from the ocean at Otford yesterday is Dr Margaret Carman.

While DNA testing will be needed to formally identify the body, Wollongong Detective Sergeant Steve Davies said "under the circumstances", it was likely to be Dr Carman, a GP at Bulli Medical Practice.

It's understood police are treating the death as suspicious.

The 55-year-old Otford woman disappeared on March 31 after setting out on the Bulga Walking Track for The Point, a favourite spot for fishermen.

Despite inclement weather, the mother of two, who was initially accompanied by her 17-year-old son Mark Aubourg before he turned back, was an experienced bushwalker suitably dressed for the conditions.

An extensive land, air and sea search was launched before being scaled back after seven days.

On Saturday, about 3pm, a fisherman found a body at the base of a 80 metres cliff, wedged under a rocky outcrop, 300 metres south of the Bulgo walking track.

Police were called in, and at one stage considered breaking through the rocks to release the body, before the search was suspended due to the treacherous conditions and fading light.

Rescuers returned at 8am yesterday, first undertaking a difficult downhill trek through rugged bushland to reach the coastline before battling crashing waves in their efforts to secure the body.

Water Police arrived in a rigid hulled inflatable boat, but were unable to approach the rocky outcrop.

PolAir arrived at 11.45am and winched the body from the ocean, later delivering it to Bald Hill where a large crowd of Easter Sunday sightseers had gathered, together with people who knew Dr Carman and were seeking to establish if she had been located.

The body was taken to Glebe morgue. A formal identification process will be necessary as the body was not recognisable.

Sergeant Davies said it was yet to be established how the deceased died.

"At this stage the cause of death is undetermined. We are looking at all options and keeping an open mind in the investigation," he said.

He renewed an appeal for two fishermen - believed to be from Sydney - who were seen using the Bulga Walking Track about 6pm on the day of Dr Carman's disappearance.

"The fishermen walking up the track were described as wearing bright yellow wet weather fishing gear and they were carrying fishing rods and buckets.

"We'd ask for those people to contact police or Crime Stoppers."

Sergeant Davies praised the work of Police Rescue in the operation.
