Costello 'never had balls to challenge'
Former treasurer Peter Costello "never had the balls" to challenge John Howard for the Liberal leadership, former opposition leader John Hewson says.
Dr Hewson, opposition leader from 1990-94, endorsed Mr Howard's verdict of Mr Costello as unable to relate to people.
He said he never believed Mr Howard would stand down as prime minister and would only depart if he lost an election or was carried out in a box.was carried out in a box.
"When it comes to the leadership, Costello never had the numbers and he never had the balls to challenge John Howard," Dr Hewson told Sky News on Friday.
