I have an old Dell laptop bought at 2002. inspiron intel penting 4 1.8GHz, 256M Ram, 40G hard drive. Originally running XP home, later I installed XP professional. It takes very long to start up. It happened after I activated the chinese input function ( I feel it maybe just a coincedent). Once it started, the speed of webpage loading is fine. Recently, I used it to see Chinese movies and dramas from UUsee. After two hours, it tends to freeze. I have to clean the disc. Most often, the computer has files of 160,000k can be cleaned. Sometimes I have clean twice, because I saw there are 46,000k need to be cleaned even if I just run the disc cleaning.

My question is : Is there a way to make a the computer not to store these temperary files. How can I make it faster without buying a new one? should I reinstall XP home? Thank you!

most likely the bottleneck is memory

I think you are right. The memory is too low
