这项首次载人任务从得克萨斯州西部起飞，到距离地球地面逾100公里的太空边缘。这项飞行任务全程原本料历时11分钟，但实际时长为10分20秒。
“新谢泼德”号火箭发射时天空普遍晴朗，天气状况良好。
“新谢泼德”号不需驾驶员，全由电脑操控，太空舱共有6个座位，但此次只有4位搭客，包括57岁的贝佐斯和他53岁的弟弟马克，还有82岁美国资深女飞行员芬克，以及18岁荷兰少年戴蒙。
贝佐斯和3名成员18日曾参加速成训练班，为“蓝色起源”周二进行的首次载人航行做准备。
“新谢泼德”不会进入地球轨道，它会将船员带到离地表100公里的高空，然后用降落伞返回。“维珍银河”之前也曾完成创办人，即英国亿万富豪布兰森等4人的载人飞行，但它飞到的高度只有86公里。
专家称这是世界上首次由全平民组成的无人驾驶太空飞行全体人员。它代表了“蓝色起源”的首次载人航天飞行。
