美国国防部参谋首长联席会议（Joint Chiefs of Staff）后勤专家泰勒（Hank Taylor ）少将表示，喀布尔机场已于格林威治时间16日19时35 分重新开放。他表示，一架C-17运输机载着美军陆战队员已降落喀布尔机场，第二架载着一支陆军单位即将落地，协助维持机场治安。
泰勒表示，美军掌管喀布尔哈密德．卡赛国际机场（Hamid Karzai International Airport）军用、商用飞机的飞航管制。他补充说，已经有约2500名美军在喀布尔协助撤离数千名美国公民和协助美方翻译等工作的阿富汗公民。他指出，到了美国时间16日结束之前，美军地面部队会达到3000至3500人之间。
数千名阿富汗人急欲离境以逃避塔利班统治，一架15日从哈密德·卡赛国际机场起飞前往卡达乌代德空军基地（Al Udeid）的美国空军C-17A货机，一度传出挤进了800人，管制员听了都惊呼“你飞机上有多少人？800？老天爷…飞机拉升的漂亮”。
富比世（Forbes）报导，一架C-17A环球霸王式巨型飞机理论上可载17.1万磅的货物，若以每人200磅（约90公斤）来算，刚好足以载800人。但就空间来说，这架飞机只设计用来乘坐134名军人和他们的装备。肯定的是，紧急情况时可以超越这个搭载量。
一名美国官员告诉军事新闻网站防务一号（Defense One），编号 RCH871的这架C-17运输机降落后，计算到的阿富汗人数约640人，意味着机组员起飞时超估了机上人数。
但RCH871绝非单一特例，同一名官员据报告诉防务一号，其他飞机上搭载的人数可能比640人还多。
