澳洲助理国防部长哈斯蒂（Andrew Hastie）宣布，澳洲海军不会理睬中共要求进入所谓“中国领海”的外国船舶必须事先申报的新法令，并表示澳洲海军舰艇今年已六次穿越南中国海。
中国宣布9月1日起施行修订后的《海上交通安全法》。根据新法令，中国海事局要求包括军舰和潜艇在内的外国船舶进入所谓“中国领海”前需向中方事先申报。中国上个月对在其单方面强加的南海“九段线”内行驶的船舶实行了这一规定，要求它们“报告其详细信息”。但哈斯蒂说，澳洲国防军军舰不会改变他们在南中国海国际水域的行为。
据《澳洲人报》报导，哈斯蒂告诉澳洲的美国商会说：“澳洲国防军军舰和军机将继续行使国际法规定的航行和飞越自由的权利，包括在南中国海，我们支持其它国家也这样做”。
“这就是我们所说的维护基于规则的全球秩序的含义。自第二次世界大战结束以来，美国海军力量一直维护这一秩序。在阿富汗事件之后，让美国重新关注印度—太平洋地区（安全）变得非常重要。”
