Selena 在整个拉丁乐坛获得广泛的认可，她的音乐跨跃了文化的界限，深受青年和老年人的喜爱。她同时也是一位性感舞台表演者，常被称为拉丁的“麦当娜”。Selena除了她的歌唱事业以为还经常参加一些反毒品和宣传人们对爱滋病的认识等活动。


　　Selena出生在美国。她的父亲是一位墨西哥籍美国人，在Selena出生之前他就已经是Los Dinos乐队的一名成员。在Selena十岁时，父亲成为她的第一个经纪人，1983年Los Dinos乐队为她录制了第一首歌曲。

　　在Selena的成长过程中，英语是她的母语，她的第一张专辑是用西班牙语录制的，为了能有更多的听众，Selena开始正式学习西班牙语，一直到他去世。

　　80年代，Selena嫁给了Los Dinos乐队的吉他手Chris Perez，这个乐队的另外两位成员是Selena的兄妹，为她录制了许多歌曲。1987年Selena获得本年度最佳女歌手奖和最佳表演奖。在1990年她和ENI公司签定了合约，与Los Dinos乐队合作发行了最新专辑。在1993年Selena和乐队获得了葛莱美最佳表演奖，同年发行了另一张爱情歌曲辑，同时开设了一家时装公司。1994年，Selena出演了第一部电影《Don Juan Demarco》，在影片中饰演一位女歌手。年末发行了专辑《Amor Prohibido》，这张专辑获得了葛莱美金奖。 1995，Selena开始准备录制她的英语专辑，想在美国主流音乐上有所突破。一天当她来到Corpus Christi的一个旅店的时候与一位34岁名叫Yolanda Saldivar的人发生争执。这个人曾经组织过Selena的歌迷俱乐部，前几天Selena的父亲曾写信证明Yolanda Saldivar贪污歌迷俱乐部的钱。Selena被此人开枪打中后背，但她没有立即死亡，跑出大厅喊到“Yolanda Saldivar是杀人犯”。一个小时后Selena死在医院中。Yolanda Saldivar被判入狱30年。

　　Selena的死在拉丁乐坛引起了巨大的反响，在洛杉机Selena曾经演出过的地方举行了一场纪念她的音乐会，德克萨斯州州长George W. Bush宣布4月16日为“Selenar”日。
