Bonnie Tyler wasn't part of any movement in popular movement. She wasn't at the forefront of any new wave, nor was she signed to an indie UK label. She didn't have a devoted club following, and she didn't have an impact on fashion of the 1980s. She can't be called punk or ska or new romantic or techno. She sang tunes penned by other people, and relied on her producers to surround her with talented musicians. She had nagging voice problems which eventually led to surgery to remove nodules on her throat. What she does have going for her is Total Eclipse of the Heart, one of the biggest hits of the decade, and a song people still haven't completely gotten over. Total Eclipse went to number one in both the UK and the US, and Tyler is the first female artist to have an album enter the British charts at the top spot. The song was written and produced by Jim Steinman, known for having (unfortunately) written and produced Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, and basically giving an overweight, second rate singer one of the best selling albums in rock history. Technically, Bonnie Tyler can't be called a one-hit-wonder, as she was to hit the charts again with Holding Out for a Hero - another Jim Steinman piece - which appeared on the Footloose soundtrack. Last year Nikki French decided it was time to breath some life back into the old chart topper,and her dance club cover of Total Eclpise of the Heart can really liven up parties.
