Teens accused of torturing beloved neighborhood cat in Brooklyn; animal put to sleep after burns

Scruffy was put to sleep after two teens allegedly burned the neighborhood tabby cat, who trusted people.
Two no-good Brooklyn teens torched a beloved neighborhood cat for kicks in a "wanton act of evil," prosecutors charged Thursday.
Poor little Scruffy, a 1-year-old tabby, was burned down to the muscle in the depraved attack and had to be euthanized.
Angelo Monderoy, 18, and Matthew Cooper, 17, allegedly grabbed him from the hallway of a Union St. building in October and took him to a vacant apartment - where one stepped on him while the other doused him with lighter fluid.
"This wasn't a one second-incident where somebody became angry and kicked the cat," said the ASPCA's Joseph Pentangelo.
"This cat trusted people. It was a betrayal. It was a wanton act of evil."
Scruffy's chest and legs were scorched. His whiskers were severely singed and his back burned to the muscle. He was found crying and unable to move.
The ASPCA's extensive investigation included matching Scruffy's DNA to material damaged in the attack.
Cooper was charged with the sickening crime days after he was busted for allegedly robbing and beating an elderly man with a cane in the same building, according to court documents.
Cooper and Monderoy - who had not made bail - face 25 years in prison if convicted of arson, burglary, animal cruelty and other charges.
"I don't know why people do things like this," Pentangelo said. "It's a prolonged suffering. It's torture. It's evil."
