CRASH investigators are looking at whether two students from overseas killed today when their red Alfa Romeo slammed into a power pole were street racing.

Police believe the car, which was totally decimated in the crash, may have been travelling at more than 160km/h before the impact which split it into four pieces and sent the engine hurtling 50 metres down the road from the wreckage.

Two trucks had to tow the demolished car from the pole on Epping Road at Marsfield.

Police officers from Eastwood who attended the crash scene, with a senior officer from the station said it was one of the worst crash sites he ahd ever seen.

"In my 34 years in the police, it is the worst I've ever seen," Superintendent Peter Marcon from Eastwood police said.

"It's like the vehicle exploded on impact."

"It was quite horrific and pretty disappointing."

"In all honesty, we get sick of these senseless deaths. There's just no rhyme or reason.

"These guys think they're bulletproof and it can't happen to them, and it does.''

Crash investigators are looking into whether the car had been street racing in the lead-up to the crash, and are also looking into what speed the car was travelling.

"The speed in my experience is certainly over 100 (km/h) but whether it's over 140 or 160 or more, we're waiting for the formal tests to come back from crash investigation,'' Supt Marcon said.

Nathan Cam, 20, of Marsfield woke when he heard the car collide with the powerpole behind his house about 3am.

''I saw a mass of sparks fly and thought the power had short circuited,'' he said.

''My brother ran outside and saw it. He came in and said 'there has been a really bad crash'.

Mr Cam, a student, said there were often speeding cars on Epping Rd.

''it's an 80kmphr zone, people do drive faster than that, but not with such a bad result.''

Police have not yet formally identified the two dead men, one of whom is reported to have been thrown from the vehicle by the force of the crash.

"We've got a new line of inquiry which would indicate that they may be students from overseas in their mid-20s,'' Supt Marcon said.

The two men are believed to be aged in their 20s and died on impact at around 3am.

When police arrived around 4am this morning, they found a "horrific scene"

A Triple-O caller came across the accident sometime after 3am but so far no witnesses to the accident have come forward.

Supt Marcon said any person who may have seen the red Alfa Romeo in the Eastwood area should contact police.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner, as investigations continue.
