Gymnast dies during training
Workplace health and safety authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman in a gymnastics training accident in north Queensland.
Michelle Maitland fell from a 60cm tumbling trampoline on Thursday while competing in an adult gymnastics class in Townsville.
She was admitted to Townsville General Hospital in a critical condition but died on Friday.
A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokeswoman confirmed an investigation into the incident was underway.
Gymnastics Queensland executive director Wayne Hill expressed his organisation's condolences.
"As the sport's governing body in Queensland, we impose stringent safety measures, of which Townsville Gymnastics has a good track record of adherence and governance," he said.
"This was an unfortunate and extremely rare incident and we will cooperate fully with Workplace Health and Safety as part of its investigation.
"We await the outcome of this investigation to determine exactly what occurred and to ensure such incidents do not occur again."
Gymnastics Australia chief executive officer Jane Allen said the organisation was awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
"Gymnastics Australia expresses its deepest condolences to the Maitland family and all members of Gymnastics Townsville, and has offered its support at this difficult time," she said.
