Detectives have identified a prime suspect in the Lin family murder case which horrified Sydney almost eight months ago, according to reports.

Min "Norman" Lin, 45, and Yun Li "Lily" Lin, 43, brothers Han "Henry", 12, and Tian "Terry", nine, and aunt Yun Bin "Irene" Yin, 39, were beaten to death in their North Epping home on July 18.

The case initially baffled police, with senior detectives admitting they had limited evidence and could establish no motive for the brutal crime.

However, a breakthrough in the case has been made with a person connected to the family identified as a prime suspect, Sydney's Sunday Telegraph reports.

The newspaper says it knows the identity of the suspect but cannot name him for legal reasons.

It says detectives recently re-interviewed the suspect after speaking with him last year.

NSW Police Force Acting Deputy Commissioner Dave Hudson says progress has been made in the case.

"We've been working on it for a long time now and we've narrowed the possibilities, causing us to put a focus in certain areas and eliminate others," he told the Telegraph.
Mr Lin, who ran a newsagent shop, is said to have amassed a fortune worth almost $4 million, but police believe money was not a sole motive for the murders, the Telegraph says.
