关于郗小星的事件,我来解释一下。他是我博士指导老师的博士后,他和他妻子到美国来的paperwork是我帮老板做的。所以是同行,也是比较熟的。His research field is in oxide thin films. The whole thing started with his corporation with a small tech company in Santa Barbara. Xiaoxing signed a NDA with the company that he could not disclose certain confidential stuff. It appears that someone from the company told the government that Xiaoxing passed certain informations to Chinese Universities via one of his Ph.D. Xiaoxing has a number of collaborations in China as many others from USA. Anyhow, the government got Xiaoxing's emails (you know they can get all your emails) and found 4 emails related to the technologies from the company. That was how Xiaoxing was arrested. It turns out that the government mixed up the information. The emails were about a heater design which was invented in Germany in 90's and it is public information. Once Xiaoxing's lawyer presented the info to government, the case is dropped. The DOJ did not their homework correctly. Well, all of us are under the watch for two things: export license control and confidential information from your employers. The government is focusing on us in this area!
