Getting 'Windows File Protection' popup, which states 'Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD now'

Tried putting the Windows 2000 OS CD to the CDROW. While the popup went away, the PC would not restart and complaining file \winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe corrupted.

After reinstalling the OS and after done various windows updates (online to microsoft web site) and reboots, the pop up started again. If I ignore it, the reboots seemed ok without any problems. But the pop up occurs after every reboots and after start of some programs.

Wondering whether some system files have been infected with some virus. Nervous about installing any anti-virus programs as they often introduce new viruses when the licens expires, etc...

Any tip in solving the puzzle is appreciated.
