unable to remove desktop icons that appeared on their own . Right-clicking does nothing. They are not in the desktop folder. Interestingly, they do not appear in Safe Mode. SpyBot and AdAware gave me a clean bill of health.

cause: LOP "LIVE ONLINE PORTAL" Ironically they have their official website www.lop.com (notice that icons on their homepage a little bit familiar with ones on your desktop? :))
one solution: open the Add/Remove Programs panel, select "Messenger Plus!", click on the "Uninstall" button and follow the instructions displayed by C2Media's uninstaller program.
other solution: use lop uninstaller.
