The New Chinese-English dictionary was authority in this kind tool books, which contributed great in history, but it has serious shortcomings, some contents are perfunctory, lacking of proper standard of word selection, moreover, like Mao criticized, the editors separated with Chinese, fortunately, Mao is not good in English :)).
Say the word adult has a ready definition-- 大人, but the editor has such a foresight that I would be toady to our banzhu, they marked off this one incorrectly. And 大人 is easy to remember, see d-d connection?
Not only adult means 大人, but also the word world hints 大, isn't it? also land and ground, are the same.Different is 成 vs.长, one is come to result--我, the later zhang3 is in process. Small persons are not 我, all they do is follow their own interest, which are part instead of whole, therefore they don't have big 我, they are small insects.
