Californians are set to vote Tuesday on a controversial bill that would legalize marijuana across the state and set the stage for a potential showdown with federal enforcement agencies, who maintain that the drug is illegal.

Known as Proposition 19, Californians will vote on the ballot measure during U.S. midterm elections tomorrow.

While the issue is divisive federally, there is a chance that Californians will pass Prop 19 and make their state the first in the U.S. to legalize the drug.

The new rules, if passed, would allow adults to possess up to one ounce (about 28 grams) of pot. Additionally, adults would be able to grow it in small gardens on private property.

The ability to tax sales of the drug would be left up to local jurisdictions within the state, the ballot measure states.
