Thank you for calling to seek clarification on some erroneous reports that appeared in the Chinese press yesterday, September 15th. In response to those reports, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai issued a statement of clarification. The U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai wishes to clarify misleading news reports on U.S. visa policy that appeared in today’s press. The information in the articles did not come from the U.S. Consulate General and is neither accurate nor authoritative.
In fact, the United States has not changed our policy on student visas. All student visa applicants must show proof of ability to pay for their U.S. studies. This can be in the form of a full or partial scholarship or family finances. Whether or not a student has a scholarship is not now and never has been a determining factor in qualifying for a student visa to the U.S.
The Mr. Li Weiping identified in today’s news reports is not a U.S. Consulate employee. He is a private businessman with no official connection to the Consulate. Only the U.S. Embassy or one of the U.S. Consulates General can speak authoritatively on U.S. visa policy.
