Answer: NO.
You need to be physically present in US to obtain a valid AP. Although CIS may approve your AP when you're abroad if systems are not synchronized and they don't know you're not here, and it can be mailed to your foreign address anyway, but lawfully, your absence from US invalidates that AP, and therefore, you'll have to take the risk that your admission into US is denied at a later time, either at US custom when you reenter, or at CIS when your 485 is adjusted in the future. The gap between your departure date from US and the approval date of AP would be obvious in your record.
On the other hand, if you have a valid H/L status, you may apply for H/L visa outside US to reenter, and your 485 will remain active. If you go outside before AP approval, this will be the only way that you come back with your 485 case intact.
