I have a friend who will be coming to US on B-1 to meet with potential customers and to do some market research. He would like to know if it is possible to extend his stay, in case he needs extra time to finish the work. In the past he was authorized to stay for a month with his B-1.

If extension of B-1 is possible, what would be the procedure? Will he need a lawyer to handle this, or it is pretty straight forward? Usually how long an extension is allowed and how long does it take USCIS to authorize such an extension?

Another question is, can one come with B-1 to set up a company in US eventually? If yes, does he have to convert his visa to L-1? Can he do visa conversion in US or he should return and do it in his home country?

Thanks.
