Can green card holder work outside the U.S. for 2 yrs? xcw2008-02-18 21:25:03

I am a green card holder but not a U.S. citizen. I have a job opportunity in London (expat package) for 2 years. I've always heard that green card holders have to live in the U.S. for a minimum of 181 days every and each year. Is that the current requirement? Does that mean I will not be able to work outside of the U.S. while maintaining the green card status?
