The I797 mentioned POE or consulate is Toronto, but I could not get appointment there, so I picked Ottawa (会是这个原因吗? 比如他们把我的材料放到 Toronto? ).

持中国护照。新换发,因为旧护照下个月到期。

真没想到签证会出问题。 几年前上次H1B签证三分钟内搞定。

H1B visa stamping experience in Ottawa

2009-12-03

My Background: Came to USA with J1 biologist, changed to F1, and then worked as H1B in 2004-2005 for University as bioinformatician.

Then immigrated to Canada in 2004 and worked in Universities.

H1B petition with a university was submitted in July and approved in October. The work is to serve a stem cell core facility funded by New York State.

The I797 mentioned POE or consulate is Toronto, but I could not get appointment there, so I picked Ottawa (Could this be a problem?).

Appointment was for 8:00AM, arrived 9:10 AM due to heavy rain and traffic on 417 during rush hours.

Lines in light rain, 20 people ahead.

Get in around 10:30AM. Passed security check.

One lady check appointment, application form, passport, PR card, I797, sent us to windows 7 for turn in DS156, DS157. Issued a number card for queue.

Windows 4 for fingerprint.

Waited till about 11:20AM being called Windows 1, a middle-aged lady.

Good morning

SHE: Are you to apply for H1B?
I: Yes.

SHE: Give me your I797.
I: Here it is.

SHE: Give me your current employment letter.
I: Here it is. It was till May.

SHE: You were with H1B? Give me your old passport.

SHE: Give me the offer letter.

(I gave her, and also the letter from boss – here is a letter from the director about how urgent they need me to start working. She read through it).

SHE: What is bioinformatics?
I: Bioinformatics is about analyzing data for biologists.

SHE: Will your wife go with you?
I: No, she has a good job here in Toronto.

SHE: When did you come to Canada?
I: We immigrated to Canada in 2004.

SHE: You have kids?
I: Yes, one daughter and one son.
SHE: That’s perfect. Congratulations.
I: Thank you. This is great for Chinese.

SHE: Your resume?
I: Here it is.

(She kept on typing on computer.)

(The conversation was polite, light and seems enjoyable. I thought seems no problem in getting visa, just like I did in last H1B visa interview 5 years ago.)

(She started writing on a blue sheet. Handed it to me)

SHE: I am sorry you can not get visa now, we need sometime for administrative processing.
I: How long it may take?
SHE: This could take 2 weeks, or days, or longer. We will let you know when we have decision. (show me the email from 221g blue sheet).

SHE: Do you want your passport?
I: Yes, maybe I need some travel during the waiting. Like shopping in the States.

SHE: But if you take it back, you will need to mail it back to us when needed. This could take extra time.
I: That’s fine.

(After that, I asked if she need any document, she said no).

She kept DS156, 157, and resume and returned other documents. She did not ask for diploma and transcripts.

Below if the blue sheet of feedback:

希望这条路可以走得通。对签证本身则似乎只能听天由命?
