do we need invitation letter from China to apply visa to China? wondering20062012-06-03 23:38:21

kids hold US passport and go to China soon. Do they need inviation letter from CHina before apply China visa from SF consulate? We heard it is needed from Canada now and not sure we will need the letter from relatives in CHina.
