valid US visa is needed? HK2004-12-08 02:22:38

I plan to take a 5 night cruise from New Orleans to Caribbean Western, which means I will go out of the US to Mexico. Do you know when I return to US (still on the cruise), do I need to have a valid US visa? Currently I am having a H1 status but the H1 visa was expired. The cruise is only last 5 days.
