DHARAMSHALA: The issue of Tibetan residents in India applying for Indian passports is a growing debate among Tibetan community across the globe these days.
The ministry of external affairs has put a condition that those who are applying for Indian passports have to give up their refugee status and leave Tibetan settlements.
Many see it as a blow to a more than 55-year-long struggle for Tibetan cause against China as adding to it not much Tibetans are coming from Tibet these days.
here are about 1,50,000 Tibetans living across the globe out of which 1,20,000 are said to be living in India. Karma Rinchen, secretary in security department divulged that the number of Tibetans coming to India from China have also decreased. "It was more than 3000 a year till 2008 but now the number has come down to 350 a year" he said.
