然而事情却出乎意料,客机起飞14分钟后就遭到5名劫机犯劫持,飞行路线也大转弯朝向纽约市。
值此混乱之际,在美国航空任职14年的邓月薇依直觉行事,她在机舱尾端打电话至该航空设于北卡罗来纳州首府罗里的客服中心,告知机上发生的事,及时让世人知道一场震天动地的恐攻正在上演。
根据公布的录音片段,邓月薇以平稳的语气说:“驾驶舱没有回应,商务舱有人被刺了,我想有人释放“梅斯”(Mace)毒气,我们无法呼吸。我不太清楚现在状况,但我想我们被劫机了。”
邓月薇与同事合力跟地面维持通话23分钟,提供了所有可能的重要资讯,包括劫机犯的身分,这也使得塔台人员及时通报美国各地,预防更多类似攻击。
尽管通话时间不长,却足以将飞机里发生情况公之于世,当时恐怖分子重伤了两名空服员,割开了一名商务舱乘客的喉咙,并强行进入驾驶舱,在那里面,劫机犯很可能杀死了2名副驾驶,取得飞机的控制权。
在另一段公布的通话录音中,邓月薇说:“我们的1号被刺伤,我们的5号也被刺伤了。有任何人可以联系到驾驶舱吗?有任何人可以联系到驾驶舱吗?我们甚至无法进入驾驶舱。我们不知道里面有谁清醒着。”
她的最后一句话是“为我们祈祷”。
11号班机在8时46分撞向纽约世贸中心北塔,就此联系中断,机上81名乘客和11名机组员不幸罹难。
华裔邓月薇的英勇之举获“九一一委员会”(911 Commission)宣告她是国家英雄。
