 三十年代美国南方正在肆意屠杀黑人，把他们的尸体挂在树枝上面焚烧。

残酷的照片震憾了纽约诗人Abel Meeropol，之后他写下了载人史册的诗“奇异果”

STRANGE FRUIT

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,

Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant South,

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,

Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,

And the sudden smell of burning flesh!

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,

For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop,

Here is a strange and bitter crop.

某天他把“奇异果”带到纽约下城Greenwich Village 的cafe society酒吧，让爵士乐手比莉哈来黛阅读。之后比莉哈来黛在cafe society演唱了后来成为她名曲的歌曲“奇异果”。

那首歌给当时的“知识分子”带来了无比的震憾, cafe society也一下成为了当时文人墨客们云集的小天地。因此FBI把比莉哈来黛列入黑名单，让她在成名之后常常领取不到纽约警察局发给的演出许可证。 比莉哈来黛不仅是一位优秀的爵士乐手，也是一位勇敢的民权斗士。她是第一个站在舞台上面演唱反种族仇杀的黑人乐手。

“奇异果”唤醒了无数良知的白人，成为反种族仇杀的重要历史见证。一直广泛流传至今。
