在 Violetta 巴黎的寓所

一个盛大派对正在举行，Violetta Valery 正在接待宾客。有人向 Violetta 介绍 Alfredo Gérmont，一个远道而来爱慕 Violetta 的人。爱护 Violetta 的男爵 Baron Douphol 不喜欢 Alfredo，当各宾客都手持美酒，男爵拒绝主持祝颂。Alfredo 站出来唱出颂辞，为爱情祝颂，目的是想向 Violetta 表达爱意，Violetta 回应说爱情终归会消逝，人生最好就是尽情享乐。

宾客移步到另一个房间跳舞，这个时候，患病的 Violetta 突然感到晕眩要先行离开，她请宾客继续跳舞。一众宾客离去，只有 Alfredo 留下，十分担心 Violetta 的情况。Alfredo 告诉 Violetta 他于一年前已对她一见钟情。Violetta 警告 Alfredo 不要爱上她，因为她从来已没经历过爱上一个人。Violetta 要他离开，不要再想念她。但她给了 Alfredo 一朵花，准许他于这朵花枯萎后交还给她。Alfredo 欢呼：“那就明天吧！”Violetta 答应。Alfredo 离开。Violetta 随即又要接待另一个客人。

Violetta 一个人独处，正自思考着自己是否已爱上 Alfredo，但当她想到要保住自已巴黎名妓的地位，她勉力抑压着自己的感受。

在露台下，传来了 Alfredo 的真爱宣言。

MARQUIS

ALFREDO
How are you, Marquis?

GASTON
(to Alfredo)
Didn’t I tell you that friendship
In this house joins hands with pleasure?
(The servants, meanwhile, have laid the supper table.)

VIOLETTA
(to the servants)
Is it ready, now?
(The servant nods assent.)
Sit down, my dear friends
And let’s open our hearts to each other…

ALL
You say well, for wine is a friend
That puts secret sorrow in flight!
(they sit down with Violetta between Alfredo and Gaston.)
Let’s open our hearts to each other.

GASTON
(softly, to Violetta)
Alfredo thinks of nobody but you

VIOLETTA
You’re joking

GASTON
When you were ill
He came every day,
Enquiring anxiously about you.

VIOLETTA
Be quiet!

GASTON

VIOLETTA
(to Alfredo)

GASTON
Command her, Master!

ALFREDO
(to Violetta)

VIOLETTA
Yes.

ALFREDO
(rising)
Yes? You put heart into me.

MARQUIS
Listen, now…

ALL
Yes, let’s hear the singer.
