Help for laptop crash!

Dell Inspiron 6000 crashed, I do not want to reinstall since they are many important files and photos in the computer..

After laptop turned on, I received the following sentences on the screen: Windows could not start because the folloing file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM, select ‘r’ at the first screen to start repair.

I used the Windows XP back-up CD ( I created following the instruction after received the laptop) to try to repair, and the screen of Windows Setup tells me what is happening: “windows is loading files…” seems everything is OK, then “windows is starting Windows..” and suddenly it gave me blue screen with the following lines:
Stop: C0000221 unknown hard error
\systemRoot\system32\ntdll.dll

So I can not repair in this way. I searched on web, and knew that the hive was corrupt. There are several people on the web suggested using Win98 bootable CD to enter the C:\ prompt, and then copy the missing file from installation CD to replace the corrupted on in the computer. I booted using Win98, and it gave me A:\ prompt instead of C:\, I think that was OK, but all the files in the A:\ seems to be files copied from Win98 bootable CD (which was designated as Drive E:\ with an win98.iso file in it). The problem is I can not find the Windows files in my computer, so there is no way for me to replace the corrupted files.

Is there any one here can tell me what should I do next? I really appreciate your help on this matter! I also tried the Windows XP Bootable CD and Recovery Console bootable CD that I prepared after I received the laptop, but both of them could not boot the computer.
