Create a backup copy of DVD movies
First you need to rip the movie files off from the DVD disc onto hard drive. There are a number of free programs which you can download from internet to perform this task, such as Smartripper, DVD decrypter, and DVD shrink. There are also shareware on the net but you can easily find cracks, e.g., DVDClone.
All these programs can do the basic job, that is, to remove the CSS encryption codes and the region protection codes. I was told that the famous DVDXCopy of 321 Studios uses Smartripper in the ripping stage. But I use Decrypter, Shrink, and DVDClone. The reason is that I only make backup copies not anything further such as demuxing. DVD Decrypter (by Lightening UK) is a very nice program. I like it because it has the ability to automatically create the directories on hard drive so the ripping is just a one-click job. In my experience, it is a good practice to make an entire copy of the disc first before you do anything later. Once you have a HDD copy, you can choose how to burn your backup discs.
If the total file size is less than 4.37GB (1GB=1024*1024*1024B), you can use DVDClone to burn all the files on one disc. I use DVDClone because it gives me the choice to retain menu while removing the FBI warnings and other unwanted materials. Nero Burning-Rom can burn the files but it is an all-or-none. DVDShrink can remove the warnings but also gone the menus. The only down side of DVDClone is that you need to find a crack, which means that you know you've done: Stealing. So I paid the 30 bucks a month later--as I decided to reward the programmers for their excellent work.
If the total file size is larger than 4.37GB, you still have a chance to burn it all on a single disc if the main movie is smaller than 4.37G. If it still doesn't fit, you may consider dropping one or more audio channels and compressing the VOB files. To do this, you need DVDShrink or DVDClone. While DVDShrink gives you more control over the compressing and editing, DVDClone allows you to combine the compressing with burning into a single job. Caution: if you use DVDClone, leave the "preserve menus" box open because it will be most likely to cause an error message befour the program begins to run its main course.
If the files you want to burn are anyway too large to fit in one disc, even after you have made a reasonable compression, then, you need to consider a split to two DVD-R's. The freeware for this is IfoEdit by Derrow. Ifoedit is an excellent program and its author, Derrow, is a smart guy (who was rumored to be a lead programmer of the 321 Studios). However, he doesn't give his advice for free; you must pay to learn the usage (5 bucks for three months access to his website, see below). Here is the basic steps for using Ifoedit to split a movie:
First you download Ifoedit version 0.96 from www.ifoedit.com, install it, open it, and load in the .IFO file for the main movie which you want to split. Then, click the "VOB Extras" button on the top and choose "Split to 2 DVD-Rs" in the dropdown menu.
(1) In the "VOB Extras Options" window, check "Correct Vob Unit," "Correct Original IFO files,"SPlit to 2 DVD-Rs," "Remove P-UOps," "Adjust VOB pointers," and "Adjust audio/Subp point." Choose files size as 1GB.
(2) In the "destination directory" enter or browse to find the harddrive location for the files to be burned onto the first disc, e.g., G:DISC1VEDIO_TS. In the "2nd destination directory" and enter or browse to find the location for the files to be burned to the second disc, e.g., G:DISC2VIDEO_TS. Of course, you need to manually create these directories beforehand.
(3) Check the box for "Audocopy menu-files to destination."
Now, click OK and wait for ten munites to let the program finish.
If the main movie is contained in VTS_01_xx.VOB *where xx stands for 00, 01, 02, etc), you are almost done the slitting. You conclude the splitting by clicking the "Get VTS sectors" button and clicking OK as many times as it asks. Now you can burn DISC1VIDEO_TS and DISC2VIDEO_TS onto two DVD-Rs with any burning software.
If the main movie is not contained in VTS_01_xx.VOB, but rather in, say, VTS_02_xx.VOB, you need to manually copy all the IFO, BUP, and VOB files proceeding the main movie from your origianal directory to each of the two split-disc directories. This should be done before you go on to click the "Get VTS sectors" button to modify tables in the IFO files.
Most DVD movies I am making back up copies are coded for region 1. Occasionally, I do region 6 DVDs because my DVD player is region 1. This requires the DVD reader on my PC to be multiple region or region free. I do this by using RPC Switching 0.6 and ASPICHK.
To make my PowerDVD region free, I use Region Genie.
