My friend filed I140 (NIW) years ago, then he went back to China
one and half years ago and is still in China, and the I140 was approved
several months ago.

Now he got a post-doc offer from a US university, but we don't
know what visa should he apply. J1 seems questionable, seems for sure
he did show intention of immigrating. Should it be H-1 or just apply
for EAD directly?
