My dear son,
Congratulations on getting into your dream school. With your talent and hard work, you are well deserved for this. We are so proud of you. I'm sure you will be able to easily handle all kinds of hurdles and challenges in college. However I still have some words for you. I said the same words to your sister when we sent her off.
Today is your independence day. From now on, you don't have a personal police officer living under the same roof. You don't have a dedicated babysitter bugging you around. We have confidence that you can make the right decisions on your own. You have big goals, please keep them in mind all the time. That will lead you in the right direction.
Today you go out of our door to embrace new life. We are so happy for you. Just let you know that our door is always open to you. You may come back as an achiever. You may come back as a loser. Although you have high expectations of the college. Things can go wrong. Not every day is going to be a good day. You will have problems or difficulties. It's just part of life. It's ok for you to make mistakes or experience failures. Smart people also make stupid mistakes. That's fine. You just start your own independent life. You have plenty of time and energy to recover from mistakes or failures. Feel free to call us or come back home if you want. We all love you so much. Remember we are always more than happy to welcome you home no matter what.
I know you plan to finish college early. That's awesome if you can do it. But don't feel stressed if you can not. It's not a big deal. We support you either way. Life is a long journey. As I said on your college decision day, this is just a start. College is such a precious period of your life, hope you not only absorb academic knowledge, but also make new friends; and enjoy different aspects of college life.
24 years ago, mom and dad came to this country. We believe this is one of the best places to live a life. We only had a few thousand bucks at that time. Had to manage expenses including food, house and tuition. We rented an apartment room with a lot of cockroaches. With years of hard work, we manage to make ends meet. More importantly we have your sister and you. We have so many good memories along the way of raising you up. You guys are in a much better position than us 20 years ago. Keep your good work, your future is bright. Only the sky's the limit. Hope you spend every day meaningfully. Hope you enjoy the prospective and resources of this country and contribute your share back to the country and society.
