Thanks to 拖拉机手 and  863211 for responding to my post.

I found this info over the weekend from Duke University and other three univeristies' Web site regarding this kind of extension.

J-1 Short-term Scholars have a 6-month time limit on their stays in this immigration class. DOS does not permit extensions beyond 6 months.

J-1 short-term scholars have a 6-month time limit on their stays in this visa class. No extensions are possible.

 

Does this mean person must go home for a new visa? Plaese continue sharing your suggestion and advising.
