to 没啥了不起 and 难兄难弟:
你们太偏激了,没那么严重。正象你们所说的,名字是符号,是为了别人叫着方便。孩子长在美国,连中文都不太会讲,自己常常抱怨中文名字被别人叫错,很不舒服,好容易有了绿卡了,能改了,为什么不能尊重孩子,给他改改呢?如果你们是自己上未拿到绿卡,心理郁闷,我能理解。但道理上,我们不该偏激。
我们这些做父母的,对中文有“情结”,大多不会为自己改名,但是不能防碍孩子吧!其实,我们自己也深有感受,自己在美国常常名字很难被人记住。这也是难于溶入主流的一个因素。台湾人在这方面比较开明。我们大陆人,自己跟自己过不去(我自己也一样),但是如果为孩子的一生着想,是否该行动了呢?欢迎有这方面经验和考虑的朋友来说说。。。

那就改个外国人好叫的名字,比如dong, tong, bai, ...
when you become citizen, there is one column asking

you can use his/her chinese first name as middle name
